Which router shall I buy as Netgear DG832 failed?

I have no broadband and think it is down to the router (took it around to my Dad's, changed the settings and still couldn't connect).
So what shall I get this time? The PC is old (ethernet connection) and the laptop has a 54mbps internal card but I do have a Netgear brand new 108 mbps external card.
The router always got very hot and my daughter has knocked it off the table several times.
I really want to get a new router as of 10 mins ago as I need my internet "fix"!
I can get to a PCWorld , Argos etc (would usually use Amazon and online companies but am desperate to restore my connection).
i don't want anything that is too complicated to set up.
Phew!! All replies will go to Dad (lofty Cap'n) for obvious reasons! Thanks :)

Linkysys are pretty good, says my mate.

I've never used one, but my mate's broadband is always on and hasn't gone down for a year, at least.
