Which Processor?

  roger 19:25 26 Jan 2006

I am about to buy a new laptop and cannot decide which processor to go for - AMD Turion ML32 1.8mhz and 512 cache, ML30 1.6mhz and 1m cache or Pentium M 740 or 760.

I will mainly be using the machine for word processing, spreadsheet work, multi tasking, voice dictation and some photo editing plus emailing and surfing. Little gaming.

Does anyone have any views?

Pentium M. No contest. It has superior battery life in (as near to) like for like specs (as you can get across paltforms).

I currently use a 740.

I would pick the centrino m740 or 760 over the turion any day.

Note that the 760 really runs a bit too hot, so has to have a larger fan (which will be noisier AND go above idle more frequently).

The 740 is such that, when carefully built, it can use a small fan that will only occasionally run at above idle. The 750 is a bit hotter I think, but I have not yet tried a laptop that has one.
