the laptop is an Acer Aspire 5000 (5030WLMi) at the moment it has two sticks one 512 and one 1gb DDR PC 2700 would it be better to replace both with two sticks of 1gb PC3200 or just get 1 1gb of pc 2700 and discard the 512 stick. Many thanks for all replies.

Run the crucial memory tool from:

This will identify what will and will not work in your system. It's free, and they are pretty good on price too :))

Will PC3200 run alongside PC2700?

No, I'm afraid not....I think your machine will take 2GB of memory, but you can't mix and match.

The crucial tool will tell you what's what, but your old RAM can be kept as spares, or perhaps you could sell it on?

Local OEM shop would be a good place to start, but Crucial are cheap as chips (no pun intended) on new sticks!

The Crucial scan tells me to purchase 1Gb of PC3200 but the 1GB stick in it is PC2700, so I will give them a ring. Many thanks.
