Which files can I safely delete.

Hi I've just got a new computer from a local independent shop. It's running XP and works well. Basically I want to keep it that way! Can anyone give me a broad idea of which files I can safely delete to stop my drive becoming crammed full of useless files. Also whats the best way of practically doing this? Also a brief explanation of these files would be useful so I know what I'm binning!!

Start > All Programmes > System Tools > Disc Cleanup will remove most of the garbage.
