My friend is wanting to set up a email account.I have used Hotmail for years, but am now getting loads of junk mail so am reluctant to recommend Hotmail. Your advice as to what to use please.

buteman's recommendations are e-mail clients not an e-mail account. Try googlemail. Their spam filters are fine.

I also go for Gmail.

Yahoo and GMail.
Yahoo (BTYahoo) is good as I can have up to 500 disposable email addresses so if one becomes a problem it can be deleted. Great for when you have to give an email address to an "unknown"

Woolwell,
can you tell me what the difference is between "e-mail clients" and "e-mail account"?

I've had an account with googlemail.com for approx 6 or 7 weeks now (as a necessity of setting up a smartphone) and no spam or other unwanted emails. But then again, any other account I've had has never had spam. Apart from a hotmail I had once. God knows why - I might just be lucky. Keeping fingers crossed.

Have used gmail for some years and is great at filtering spam. Can recommend over other e-mail hosts I have used in the past. Haven't used Hotmail though.

gmx.co.uk click here been using it for years, excellent built in virus checker and spam filter and online storage and host of other features. Good support and walkthroughs.
