Can somebody advise which dvd-rom drive is best to buy, as I wish to upgrade and can not find much info regarding specification, or best buy.

Yup get a Lite-on

You can buy a Pioneer 116 DVD-ROM drive - one of the very best around - for around £25-£30 as an OEM product.

Don't worry about this as the only driver you require is the standard Windows driver.

I've had mine for nearly two years and it's been superbly reliable.

Most of Lite-On's products are rebadged items from other manufacturers (nothing wrong with that) and quite a few of their rewriters are (were) rebadged Plextors; I had a TDK Vortex 12x10x32x rewriter that was a rebadged Plextor of exactly the same model number and came with the same warranty.
