Where do I purchase Hardware Modem.

I have bought an Intel modem which only connects at 22k or 33 max and when I queried the speeds was told that it is a silent software modem and I should get an Hardware modem which will connect around 46k on dialup and only downside on startup is it is noisy which does not bother me. But where do I purchase from as on checking on the net they all appear to be software modems.

What kind of PC is this for - a laptop or a desktop with PCI slots? What's the model number of the Intel modem you bought?

There are several V90 external modems up for sale on Ebay.

My machine is an Athlone3500 on XP Pro.
I have looked on sites suggested but they are either out of stock or external.Who supplies internal hardware related modems?

Maplin have WB internal hardware PCI modems available at £11.09 (665 currently in stock). They don't come much cheaper than that !!!

I've never heard of this thing of software modems being rubbish and hardware modems being better. I've had both and for me at least they connected at the same speed.

Am going over to Maplins to have a look.
The intel modem connects as stated at maximun of 32K and keeps disconnecting which I am told is a weakness of software modems.
Using same machine I borrowed an old 4 year old Best Data modem Hardware and it connects at 48k and no disconnections.
When I put back in the intel it connects at 22k and no higher apart from occasionally 32k. I then put back Best modem and it connects always at 48K.
Will borrow it for a while till I sort myself out.

I've used both "soft" and "hard" modems (the latter being a Diamond SupraExpress 56K Pro and the "soft" modems with Intel 536EP chipsets).

The "soft" modems at worst provide 44-46kbps and the Diamond 49.2mbps with Tiscali and 52kbps with Pipex.
