dvd, vcd, svcd take your pick if its a decent dvd player it will play them all

that also depends on the size of the avi file

If you use a well known burning software such as Roxio or Nero, you then select DVD or SVCD or CD and they will automatically convert into the appropriate form of MPEG (I think it's MPEG1 for VCD, and MPEG2 for SVCD or DVD).

As dibblydufuss suggests, you may want to manually convert it into other formats if you need to save space.

just to add to stlucia reply i use nero 7 to convert a avi file and it does take a long time to covert and use alot of system resources. also look on your dvd player to see what it will play by the way vcd means video cd and svcd means super video cd the last being better quality picture / hope this helps
