What’s wrong with camera battery equivalents?

  MuDelta 16:16 03 Feb 2006

Genuine Canon NB-2LH batteries for my new Eos 350D cost about £40 whereas so-called equivalents are on the net for about £15. Are they really different in performance or ate the Canon products yet another example of “printer ink syndrome” – an inexpensive item which is used to greatly enhance profit. Or is it a case of “if it looks too go to be true, it probably is too good to be true” Opinions please, or better still, experiences.

I have used "equivalent" batteries for years in my Sony camcorder and my Olympus digital and never had a problem, they have performed just as well as the originals, I do believe its a case of the brand name making excess profits from the consumer.

I am using an equivalent battery from 7dayshop in my Pentax, £9.99 instead of £39.99 for the branded item, no problems in operation, in fact I get the feeling it actually holds charge a bit longer, but I've not timed them to be sure

I use an alternative brand (Uniross) in my Canon 300D without any problems.

Nothing, that I know of.

Thanks all. As I suspected, another cheap item to make and dear to buy - a ploy which manufacturers use to boost profit in a competative market. I have ordered from Eurobateries (£12.50 delivered)as suggested by pc_sausage.

The big names' batteries are probably produced by the same companies who offer the compatible versions, just as with so many other products in the computer world and, indeed, many other types of goods.

No brand can manufacture absolutely everything it offers for sale, so turns to specialist manufacturers and rebranding or commissioning the required products.
