can one please explain the difference between clean up and format of the hard disk.(operating system included)

Disk Cleanup simply deletes temporary files and the like.

Format wipes the drive completely clean.

format wipes your hard drive clean ready for a fresh install of an operating system
clean up gets rid of all unecessary files on your hard drive and leaves your operating system ie;xp and your files in tact

Clean up deletes unnecessary/temporary/non-required junk and leaves the OS intact, format deletes everything, including the OS. Neither completely removes every trace, for that you need an erase utility.

Format sweeps everything away including Operating System, It removes all Software on your Drive Partition. Clean up is like tiding papers away on your desk

I've lost the typing race again.
