can anyone advise of the best range/distance for purchase of a wireless access point & usb wireless adapter

Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer (that I know of).

All the manufacturer's claims should be read as just that - claims. Your real world experience will depend on a whole range of factors, such as interference from other transmitters on the same frequencies, thickness and composition of walls, floors, soft furnishings, etc, even the orientation of the aerials.

All US suppliers should now be starting to move their equipment to the EU draft standard, which will limit the output power of the transmitters, to try to reduce the almost inevitable interference problems, as more and more people adopt wireless. Therefore, the particular batch on the shelf that you buy from may be throttled, or not.

The Netgear range is very good. have used them and have recommened them to many friends/clients
