What stops Norton Anti-Virus from working?

I've just installed Norton Anti-Virus 2003 on my PC running XP Home, but it won't start up. Double-clicking on the icon has no effect.

Before installing I was having lots of porn etc. stuff coming through the e-mail. There was no firewall installed. I've run PestPatrol 4 which has got rid of a load of "pests" on the machine but NAV still won't run.

I've tried disabling everything in the StartUp (using Start/Run/msconfig) and disabled all processes and tried runnnig the machine under Safe Mode, but I still can't get NAV to even open to check for viruses (the definitions are dated 2nd June 2004).

There must be something on the PC that's stopping NAV from running. I've looked through the program list and under Add/Remove Programs but can't see anything suspicious. Does anyone have any clues as to what I should be looking for? Could the registry have been permanently altered?

Panda Active Scan would be good but the other PC won't connect to the Net any more.

Look's like you have done it the wrong way round. The idea is that you put anti-virus on computer before you get a virus not after

Could it be a bad installation, in which case you may need to re-install.

I couldn,t open norton after i downloaded dial up software unless i disabled dial up.if you have it.Just a chance.

I am having the exact same problem at the moment, but noticed it seemed to start after running system restore. I have asked Symantec for a fix, but meantime have changed the shortcut (mine was reading ...\cfgwiz.exe which had no effect) on the desktop icon to:

"C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NAVW32.exe"

This will sort out the desktop icon but I am not sure how to change the shortcut properties of the system tray icon.

The anti-virus WAS on before. After gonig on the Net for a few days, it started playing up.
So I unistalled it completely and re-installed. It still won't work.

It sounds as if the installation was not completed. Surprised that you have the latest definitions, these would only be available via Liveupdate. If liveupdate is working, NAV should also be working. Did you take the opportunity to allow NAV to scan the puter before installing? Have you managed to register NAV? Were there any warning screens during installation, giving you the option to"Ignore", if so and you chose ignore, the installation may not have completed properly. You may need to uninstall, reboot and then re-install, this may cure some of the problems. You could try the "Trend Micro" site to do an online antivirus scan, before re-installing. click here

You need to compleatly clean the drive of NORTON then reload this means going into the registry
