What startup items to disable

  DANZIG 17:28 21 Jun 2008

My Vista laptop has started booting up really slowly.

I am aware that you can increase boot up time by disabling some items in the start up menu.

But which ones???

There's loads of them. Most will indecipherable names and I'm touchy about doing it as I don't want my PC knackering up.

Is there anywhere with a list of things that I can disable without causing any damage??

Best thing to use I find is CCleaner, amongst other things it has an option under the tools tab which lets you view programs that load on startup. It is a more clearer layout/description as to what loads up than gets shown in MSCONFIG IMO.

I would advise creating a restore point and or taking a backup of your system before altering any startup items

Gives you a diagnosis by 'consulting' it's database.

You can also easily reverse any alterations.

What really slowed my 1.7 GHz cpu laptop at startup was UAC. Disabled it and start-up is much faster. Security wise not a good idea or so I've read.

On this site you can type in an item and it advises on whether or not it should be included at start-up
