What resolution for a new monitor?

I have bought the aldi back to school pc and am looking for a new monitor around 20" sz. I've seen some samsung ones but the majority have a resolution of 1600 x 900 is that ok or should I be looking for a higher resolution?(I'm sure my current is x 1080 or something like that!)
Also what does the 50000:1 mean? Thanks!

PS that's 1920 x1080!

Any answers plz???

A standard 19” LCD monitor will have a screen resolution of 1280 x 1024 at 60Hz

A19” Widescreen LCD monitor will have a screen resolution of 1440 x 900at 60Hz

A standard 20” LCD monitor will have a screen resolution of 1680 x 900 at 60Hz

Some Samsung 20” LCD monitor have a screen resolution of 1680 x 1050 at 60Hz

Your existing or previous monitor is probably a 4:3 screen ratio or standard monitor - the 1600x900 resolution is for a widescreen monitor.

A 1920x1080 resolution would normally be used on a very large TFT monitor, such as this 24in Viewsonic:

Simply use the resolution you are happy with!!!
there is no set rule to what you need to have...

Go for one that suits your needs & budget.

A higher resolution will give you more 'desktop real estate'. This basically means that you can have more Windows open side-by-side than a lower resolution screen.

1920x1080 res (with 16:9 aspect ratio) is full HD resolution & is handy to have when watching HD films, having two more-or-less full-sized Word documents opened side-by-side & for gaming - although some users prefer the more conventional 1920x1200 16:10 (seen in 24" & larger screens) for the latter. G

P.S. Always set a TFT monitor screen to its native resolution for the best possible picture & text.

Thanks- I'm not sure what resolution I'd be hapy with as i haven't had many monitors in the past. I'll look at all the links!

Thanks- what are misco like as sellers?

Have a look at the review pages in any recent copy of the mag.

The flat screen reviews give a general idea of specs to look for, which should be sufficient for your needs, even if you don't go for the recommended buys.
