What is "Page file usage"

Can anybody explain what page file usage is please and if there is an average rate at which it should be operating. The reason i ask is for about 5 to 6 month since i bought my pc it has been running at around 300MB but in the last few days it has gone up to around the 730MB mark. The only thing i have installed in the last few days is firefox.

I don't know why it may have gone up with the insallation of FireFox.

Anyway, the above will suggest ways of ensuring it works best.

Thanks for that Diodorus i think i know what it is now but i still can't understand why it has gone up.

Anyone else any ideas?

You can resize it. If it was set to be managed by windows it might have been increased because something (maybe firefox) was eating a lot of memory. You could always resize it yourself.
