What is MsMpEng.exe please?

  holme 22:13 11 Aug 2007

The hard disc occasionally starts thrashing of its own accord and, under Processes, "MsMpEng.exe" eats up to 45% processor power.

It's a System process. Any ideas what it is and what it's doing please? The other, er, 55% is System Idle Process. TIA.

Sorry, forgot to mention that Defender's automatic scan option is UNticked.

Thanks, but tried that first before posting this query.

Have also tried uninstalling Defender and re-installing a brand-new download.

The problem is: If the Defender daily auto-scan feature is UNticked (confirmed), why does the machine seemingly still run MsMpEng.exe?

Also at a time which is well after start-up (typically more than 1 hour) and in any event not related to the default time set under Defender (02:00). But that's UNticked anyway...

Clearly we're not the only ones getting this hiccup, the Microsoft site has long threads about it.

I would wait until Microsoft Up-dates on Tuesday before you do anything drastic,It looks like a problem with Defender and Windows live One care,As Microsoft know all about it I would imagine that a fix would come shortly.
