what memory do I need for my pc?

  nojs 15:29 19 Jan 2004

I have a MSI K7N420 PRO motherboard fitted with 2 x 128mb pc2100 ddr sdram 133mhz modules in dimm slots 1 and 3. I would like some more memory but when I look for some that match they are listed as being 266mhz, will these work? Acording to the m/board manual I can fit between 64mb and 512mb in each slot, taking into account my 2 128mb modules I already have what is my best option?

PC2100 DDR runs at 266Mhz not 133Mhz. So the details you have given for what you currently have installed do not seem correct.

Your MSI board supports PC1600 (200Mhz) PC2100 (266Mhz) and PC2700 (333Mhz)

yes I think your right about the mhz, I was looking in the msi manual and it does state pc1600 @ 100mhz and pc2100 @ 133MHZ.

having read the review at click here is it time to get a new board and processor? This board is quite old now and only has an xp1700 chip, as I also want more memory would it make sense to buy a new board, and if so which one?

It depends on what you do with the machine.

A 1700+ will run most applications perfectly OK. The reality is that fast processors are only really necessary for home use if you are doing video editing.

It would be my view that unless that is the case then by simply changing your memory to PC2700 and installing at least 512MB it will have a noticable impact on your systems performance.

at a cost of about £65 (the post from bremner) - although you will not notice that much of a boost to performance (just carried out a similiar upgrade from a XP1600 to XP2600 and changed the memory to pc2700)
