What is a keygen?

  SpyMan²°°³ 07:45 04 Feb 2003

Hi all,

I know it is short for key generator but are these legal? I bought Winzip 8.0 off a mate but i am a bit wary at the fact it said it was an evaluation, then when i used the keygen it became the full version. Is this normal? Is this what WinZip send or let you download when you upgrade from the evaluation to the full version?

Its piracy, and also if you have win me or above they have their own built in compression.

The use of a keygen may be illegal if the purpose is to get full use from a piece of software which would normally require payment.

Thus if you use a keygen for Winzip and consequently avoid paying winzip corp. for the use of Winzip, that is probably illegal.

I don't think that Winzip send out keygens for their software. However, I use the words "may be" adn "probably" because I am not sure. Have a look at the info about the keygen and it will tell you if it came from Winzip or another source.

Key genes are small programmes written by hackers that generate a random registration key to "unlock" evaulation software, in effect it fools it into thinking that it has been paid for. In some instances it also unlocks hidden or restricted features that were unavaliable in the shareware version. it will for example do away with the "20 days of use left" message that you get on opening the programme. There are keygens on warez sites etc for almost every peice of software ever written, but you take your chances going on these sites bearing in mind that they are written by hackers!!
So in short the use of them IS illegal as you in effect pinching the revenue that programers rely on.

Thanks for the Info, i am off round my mates house to knock him out now.

He said that keygens are what the suppliers send out when you upgrade from the demo version.

SpyMan²°° - it may well be the case with WinZip - but I am not sure. Someone who uses winzip may know.

Physical voilance is also illegal!! LOL,

What winzip send you when you register is the ACTUAL unlock code, not a random generator, hope this helps

"Physical voilance is also illegal!! LOL"

But good luck all the same!

Theonewhowatchesoveryou, has answered it all perfectly, and enlightened me some too.

Winzip uses the letters of the name it is to be registered to, to generate the product code. This is what you are sent when you buy Winzip. Or it least it was when i did it several years ago.
