What have I done? Broken CPU, Burnt out M/Board

  PC Wrecker 13:47 20 Aug 2007

Please can someone advise me - as a complete amateur my Brother in Law decided to try to fix my PC for me.
Emachines 420 - completely dead. He decided to take the PSU apart to "fix it". This didn't work so I purchased a new PSU. It now seems that the motherboard has been burnt out by the PSU failure.
Not a problem? Well, I bought a new motherboard, he took the CPU out & promptly stood on it!
I've been looking for a new 478 socket CPU but can't find one anywhere.
Does anyone have any ideas where I can get on & if so, is it likely that I can fit this myself?

I'd fix your BiL first and worry about a CPU afterwards...:-)

He broke it, he should fix it.

How can anyone be so clumsy?

BIL should replace the machine- preferabley not an E-machine

B-I-L has been suitably "Broken"!!

I think I'll source a new CPU and go from there.....will you be able to help me if I get into difficulties? please!

From what I've read on here it's all fairly straight forward.

I'll be sending the bill for components to the B-i-L, but as for making him fix it.....I DON'T THINK SO! :-)

Complete amateur apparently...

Should pay, certainly.

I didn't mean he should fix it himself - heaven forbid!

Brilliant, have just ordered a replacement CPU. Will let you know how I get on!
I thought I might check the static levels of the CPU with my B-I-L's private parts when finished!
That should do the job
