What kind of graphics card can I upgrade to as I don't jnow the difference between them?

That should have read "My desktop SPECS are as below"

I see it has a VIA chipset as onboard graphics does this mean I need to use a VIA chipset plug in card?

Depends on your budget, and your PSU, but any half-decent Nvidia I would say.
