What do I look for in a graphics card ??

  woofwoofbark 10:15 22 May 2008

I have a system that includes on-board graphics , they are very basic intel 945 128MB , I downloaded Call Of Duty 4 demo to try but it would not run on my comp...

I need to buy a card but what do I look for ?

Ive look at some cards that mention things like

Video memory speed

Amount of memory on the card

Memory Type

Clock speed

Is it a case of the more for each the better ?

Ive seen cards with engine clocks at 540MHz with 256MB memory , and cards with 400MHz 1024MB memory .. which would be the better card for gaming ?

Any help & advice is most welcome.

I have Intel Pentium D Dual Core 3.0 processr
2GB PC2-4200 533 Memory
149GB Sata internal HD
149GB external usb HD
WinXP Home ( machine came with Vista Home Premium but reverted back to XP)

It depends on your needs and pocket size i.e £££££

First thing you need to do is make sure your motherboard has an AGP or a PCIe slot to put the card into. (Although the Intel 945 supports PCIe) For about £100 you can get a Nvidia 8800GT that will play CoD4 click here just make sure you have a good power supply (>500w) with a spare connector.
A card with =>512mb of RAM would be beneficial and =>7800GT, 8800GT or 9800GT depending as woodchip said on how much you want to spend.
