What is a codec

I have just downloaded codecs and installed them, after advise from a thread. But what exactly is a codec and how do you know which one to install. I recieved a link to codecs there were hundreds of them. I saw one XP codecs and it solved my problem, but it was shere luck. Does it depend on which motherboard, video card, sound card. can someone please answer my question.

Depends on just exactly you want the codecs for.

Most people are looking for the right codecs to play DVD's - try that link above, or if its not for DVD use, simply do a Yahoo or Google search for "Codecs" and you will get a whole plethera of sites all specialising in the different types of Codecs, and what they are, and what they do

A program driver that is used to compress video files. A Decoder does the same but reverse direction it reads the Video files so you can view them
