What causes conflicts with internet security?

Why do applications sometimes conflict with internet security programs?

Is it poor program writing, or is it inevitable even with good program writing?

I have just been told by a program vendor that to successfully download updates to his program I must first turn off my internet security software, and I am wondering why. Many people tell me I need internet security software, but here is a program vendor saying turn it off. I do not understand how this comes about.

Usually it not the download where security needs to be disabled but installing does.

Anti-virus programs can sometimes interfere with software installations. I don't understand, however, how they might interfere with a non-malicious download.

What's the program that you are trying to update?

all my games updates tell me my computer is behind a firewall, even when i've configured it i still get them, just takes longer to download, theres no way i would disable my firewall

It is updates to my Speed Camera Detector that will not download/install. The manufacturer's only advice is to turn off internet security.
