What to buy to set up a network

I have 2 computers that I want to network so I can share the printer & BB connection. They are close together so a cabled system will do. What I want to know is the the Telewest cable modem plugs into the lan connector on the one M/C, and lan connector is free on the other. Does this mean all I have to purchase is a network card for the M/C that the lan connector is being used on and connect the cable from the network card to the lan connection on the other M/C or am I missing something.

Hi alan,

Depends what you want to spend, but my personal choice is a router.

This will sit between your 2 PCs and will take the modem connection and the connections from each PC. It will automatically sort out "routing" of data from the modem ( both PCs can connect to the net at the same time) and the other PC. It will also act as a firewall to your "home LAN".

It also means that you don't have to have one PC as a server (i.e. always on), the router acts as the server so each PC is independant of the other.

However the knowledgeable folk here may have a more suitable solution for you.

Happy surfing!
