"its all gobbledegook to me.in laymans terms what exactly is it for ?"

What does it matter? However click here

You say you don't need it, so un-install and then ask some hard questions of the "kids".

oh i reckon i dont need it as i didnt download it,my kids are teens so there will be questions asked, the only thing i can think of is my daughter installed quick time bundled with her digital camera soft ware so it maybe was on the disc?- i dont use quick time and had it and uninstalled it before i use klite

I had a similar query after installing Photoshop CS3 and the latest iTunes.
Hrer is a copy of a reply from the Bonjour development team:Did you recently install Adobe CS3?

Bonjour is a general purpose networking protocol that is available for
Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, printers, applications, etc. For example, all the
major printer makers (Canon, Epson, HP, Xerox, etc.) have built Bonjour into
their network printers. It simplifies network printer setup & discovery
dramatically.

In the case of CS3 Premium, CS3 uses it to automatically discover other
systems/computers that are part of the document workflow process. I'm told
there's absolutely no harm to CS3 to disable it, and there's also no risk to
leave it turned on. It's not a security threat in any way, shape, or form.

The only downside to turning it off is that if you want to use the automatic
discovery mechanism in CS3, you'll need to turn it back on.

It's also used by iTunes for Windows to discover other copies of iTunes
running on your local network (and -not- outside your network!), so that you
can share/stream music with & to each other.

You can find out more about Bonjour here:

Bonjour is a built-in feature with iTunes (to let you share music with other
iTunes users on your home network), and in Safari (to allow you to find
Bonjour advertised webservers).

While I think there's great reasons to leave Bonjour installed, this is
ultimately your choice (and I wouldn't stop you from removing it).

That said, I only have command lines that'll uninstall it, so you'll need to
go to the command prompt to run them:

"C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder" -remove

-and-

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mdnsNSP.dll"

Hope this helps,
