I HAVE A PHONE SOCKET EXTENSION SO IF I PLUG THE MODEM IN TO THAT WILL THE PHONE WORK

Not sure. I think you still need the filter plugged into the extension.

You can run all your phones through one phone filter, so place that where you BT line comes in. Use a second filter on your extension plugging you ADSL modem in one side and a phone or your 56k modem in the other.
Just remember any unfiltered phone when picked up will cut your broadband connection.
