I plugged in a flash drive (as i've done hundreds of times before) this time it was not recognised, so I removed it and tried it again only to get a malfunction message sort of like 'a device has malfunctioned' - further attempts throw up an error message code 43, then both external USB storage drives 1TB and 500GB stopped being seen and they get the same code 43 message. My USB keyboard and USB wireless mouse as well as USB headphones still work OS is Windows 7. as an added annoyance neither USB ext. drives are being recognised by my laptop either although the flash drive is!

Uninstall all USB items in Devices, then re-start the computer. USB ports should then be auto reset.

Tried that also tried "Troubleshooting" all I get is "drivers are latest" then code 43!!!!

What i cannot understand is why my Laptop also fails to recognise them now.

Just plugged in USB Printer as an experiment - recognised and works no problem!

Sounds like something as written to the Drive boot sector. Try starting in Safe mode then plug USB in and run AV on the Drive

Thanks, but why would I get the same not recognised on two different machines?

with two different Ext Drives.

Could have past from one drive to the other starting with the USB stick

Two different Computer tells you that its the drives that as the problems
