weird problem

Hi all,

Hope someone out there can help.

I have a wireless router that is connected to a desktop PC by ethernet cable (LAN) and to my laptop by WLAN. On the WLAN it is fine, but on the LAN I can ONLY see some selected sites (google, facebook) and not very much else. I have tried just about everything I can think of: firewall settings, spyware settings, anti-virus, resetting IE (same issue on safari or firefox though), resetting the router to default settings and even reinstalling windows. I have a speedtouch USB modem and when I switch the router for that modem it works fine! Thus it has to be something to do with the router's settings for LAN (but not WLAN as that is ok).

Anyone got any ideas?

Colin

Could be a DNS issue.

Open a command prompt and type "ipconfig /all"
Copy and paste the results on to the forum.

What sites can you not access? (give us a few links)

If you have re-installed windows then I would think that the problem is something to do with the router.

Try doing the same as the previous post on the laptop and see if there are any differences.

Can you connect the laptop via Ethernet cable to the router? If so try using the same port that the desktop is connected to. (Remember to disable the wireless on the laptop first!)

You could also try to use "Tracert" in a command prompt.
Try tracing to a website that does work and then one that doesn't. i.e tracert www google com (without the spaces)

Which router is this? I wonder if it is an issue with the MTU setting. Can you access the routers interface and look for MTU and check what value it is set at currently.

I plugged the laptop into the router via ethernet cable and i worked fine(!). Have also tried altering the MTU values by using a utility called DR TCP, but none of the values I entred (1500, 1492 etc.) made any difference. For info the ipconfig /all for my other broadband USB modem (which works fine) is below...

Hi

All sites work OK on my laptop at work.

Get home and the odd site does not work.

I have turned off firewall, ransacked all settings on my edimax router and still cannot connect to various sites e.g. moonconnection.coom (an igoogle widget provider) and digitalspy - at my daughters request.

Any joy??
