I've recently bought a Logitech Communicate STX, use it regularly to speak to family scattered all over the world. No complaints so far. Picture quality seems to be accepted by all, so cant be bad. Hope this helps.

But it only cost £7 from my loca currys, and it has a built in mike and loads of cool visual effects! I would highly recommend it as a good value child friendly webcam.

I know this may be a more expensive option but there are drivers available on the net to get a USB Eyetoy working as a webcam. The picture quality is superb even compared to the more expensive models of the logitech range. Your kids might already have one if they have a PS2? Or ebay? Dunno how much they are in the shops now, I think I paid about 30 quid for one last christmas.
