web site

Hi all,
Can someone please tell me what makes your web site get picked up by a search engine such as google? Is the first thing found the domain name? or text on the first page? Do you have to do anything to get your web site to be seen by search engines?
Ive been told there are companies which ensure your site is seen for a fee, but warned a lot of them are rip off merchants.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Getting LISTED on Google is easy and free. You go to Google, search for ADD URL, and click on the first link that comes back. It’s a page that’ll let you punch in the site you want listed, and presto you’re in! Except you’re in with 3.3 billion other pages. The hard part isn’t being listed, as much as being FOUND. The secret there is to guess what search terms people will use to find you.

To answer some of your questions, sites search for either text, or META tags for key words. It depends on the search engine.

Once you've managed to get it on one search engine it seems to find its way onto all the others eventually.
