Hi I keep going to shareware sites and trying to download gif's and Jpeg's but when I save them I can only open them as ART files or Bitmap.

None of which open is MS Paint. I dont understand why they dont save as gif's if they are gif's

right click the image, click the "Save as" option and save it as a jpeg or gif from the dropdown file type list.

Should be able to open a Bitmap, (but not ART) you can then go to file menu and save as gif
You may find depending on how many colours are in the images that Jpeg offers a better quality and compression for web use.
Also Portable network group "PNG" is slowly replacing GIF and offers much better colour reproduction and compression than GIF.
However some older browsers my not support it and you will need more powerful software to use and take advantage of it i.e Paint shop pro8 (PSP8)which is not too expensive
