Ways of reducing spam when publishing email ids?

I've avoided junk mail for years by not giving my email address out freely - in fact I keep a real but unused address for those occasions when I have to give one out. However now I'm going into business and I want to publish a mail address on a web site. I read some years ago of some techniques that might fool some of the scanners used by spammers, but I don't have that info now. Any advice? (I'm just starting on javascript and I wonder if a script that 'constructs' an address would work, i.e. the address never appears in literal form.)

Sorry if this has been done before, but all forum searches I've tried lead to ways of stopping junk mail once it has already started, i.e. cure and not prevention.

Thanks
Tony

I'm not up with Java methods but not putting the email on site as a mailto: link may help a little.

I'll check out all of the links, but the first one looks like an easy fix for now. Much appreciated.
