It should be in a readme file somewhere on the cd.

Navigate to the win98 folder and look for a file called serial.no and open it in notepad.

It's not on the CD. Find someone who has a 98SE cd and the Key for it and try their Key, it should work.

Keyfinder, as suggested by VOG will find the key on your friends machine (as will AIDA32) but will not read it from the installation CD.
How did you install 98se on your friends machine without the key ?

the pc was dead, replaced power unit,pc would not boot, used 98 boot up floppy - fdisk- then reloaded windows as far as enter key code then found not on the chassis and he has no idea where the w98 booklet with the key code is.
i put the cd in my computer and had a trawl through the folders but could not find where it is kept.

I am not aware of any legal way to fix your problem. Maybe other forum members can help.

CD key will not be on the orignal CD

Octal got a backup CD and the person did the backup also put the key on the CD. Where did you get your CD? It may not be legal.
