Volume licensing Office 2007 Pro

I bought a shrinkwrapped, legitimate copy of MS Office Pro from mmy local computer shop. It was in the normal hardshell case, had all the correct holograms, product key, MS certificate of authenticity. I installed it on my Dell Dimension 500 running Windows 7. All went weill initially but after a hard-drive failure I had to reinstall it. I then tried to take advantage of the MS offer of free upgrade to Office 2010 and everything went wrong. I contacted MS through the Digital River site.
I was told that this product was purchased through 'Volume Licensing'and therefore was not includedin the MS Office 2010Technology Guarantee Program so I could not upgrade free. Even worse was the fact that since I have reinstalled after the HD crash I get a message on screen each time I try to use the program telling me it is not Genuine MS Software and will expire in xx days.
Digital River seem totally disinterested. Anyone know where I should go next?
