I am upgrading my pc from windows 95 to windows 98 se2. have booted the pc using the windows 95 start up disk.then formatted the c: drive using format c: /s after the format i boot up from the windows 98 start up disk. Then switch to the d drive to access the cd.type setup and the windows 98 set up programm runs. at the first automatic reboot, windows will not load. error message is: unable to load or find missing file. c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd
have formatted and reloaded win 98 3 times. i get the same error. I can boot the pc into safe mode, but of course cannot then access either the floppy drive or the cd rom i copied this missing file from another pc running win 98. no difference.
originally I tried to boot the pc using a windows 98 start up disk, but then when i tried to format, using format c: /s or even format c: the commands are not recognised.
the microsoft site lists this problem as a problem with umax scanners. I don't use a scanner. why will the virtual device library not load ? any help would be most appreciated.
Have just reinstalled Win98se after clearing out a nasty Trojan and uninstalling several unmemorable/unused applications. On startup I now get an error message: SYSTEM.IMI refers to this device file but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this on purpose try uninstalling the application. If you still want to use C:\Windows\System\VMM32\enable.VXD reinstall the application.
And then says press any key to continue
Trouble is I have no idea what the application might be.
Should I do what 'try this' suggests or is this a different problem ?
