Vista's time remaining when transfering files ques

I just bought a Buffalo 500GB USB external drive and I'm in the process of transferring files from my Iomega Ego 250GB drive onto it in order to free it up for Acronis backup duties. There are a lot of largish files on the Ego made up of music and video, and my question is this, what is it with "time remaining" in the Vista transfer window? One minute it says "About 3 hours 15 minutes left" then it says "About 7 hours 20 minutes" then some other time, the thing's all over the place!

I guess what I'm asking is what use is the bloody thing if it keeps going up and down all the time? It may as well say "take a guess, yours is as good as mine" for all the help it is LOL.

Windows file transfer times have always been erratic. Suggest a large pinch of salt is the only thing you can take with them. All versions of Windows are as bad.
