vista wont boot

  vectradam 10:16 30 Sep 2010

ive read other posts on here but now im stuck.

my vista laptop for no apparent reason would not load windows recently.

i did not have the vista disc. i acquired a vista boot repair disc and have tried to use it.

it is a 'mini pe2-xt' disc - digiwiz

i have followed the instructions ie

hard drive tools

enter drive - c

it says "do you want to fix errors, bad sectors and recover readable information " - i click "y"

i then start chkdsk.exe c/r

it says chkdsk .exe c / r is running

then says -

type of file system is RAW
cannot lock current drive
chkdsk is not available for RAW drives

CHKDSK.CMD : check disk done

press any key to continue

anyone any ideas where i go from here ?

many thanks

Raw drives are a major heartache for Windows but the can usually be read by and data recovered from them by making and booting from a 1 or 2GB pen drive loaded with Slax Linux full instruction and utility here

Boot into Slax Linux mount the Raw drive then you will be able to copy all your data to an external USB hard drive and with a bit of luck you may be able make a copy of the Factory Recovery Partition for use with a replacement drive

In some instances RAW drives can be recovered using the hard drive makers utility to reset the whole drive to zeros

Cheers HC

incidentally ,its a dell inspiron 1720 with a samsung hm250ji hard drive.

i can boot into safe mode and hard disc appears healthy in device manager ,showing correct used and unused portions.

dell check is showing error 2000-0146

what is the easiest way to get photos off of this computer
