Vista will no longer update

For 8 months Window updated automatically but after failing to down load SP1 my Acer laptop has failed all other updates and requires 'Start up fix' to boot up.
After any download, on restart I get updating stage 1 of 3 then after stage 2 completes the computer restarts and 'Start up fix' begins.
Windows updater now says I have never had any updates. System restore also fails.
The only way my laptop works now is with Windows updater switched off.

Thanks for the reply but in update history in now shows there has been no updates, despite numerous updates previously. I have a list of the download error codes taken before they disappeared, 80242016, 800f0816, 8024002d and 80080008.
