Vista Sleep Mode

I have just bought a new PC with Windows Vista. If I leave it overnight in sleep mode, will it still be able to carry out tasks such as backing up and scanning for spyware, or does it have to be fully on for that?

Also, most people are aware that it is difficult to totally delete files from a hard drive, unless you use specialist software, but is it also possible for people to know what websites a person has visited by looking at their hard drive, and could they find out any information that they had typed into a webpage, such as bank details?

Any answers to the above gratefully received.

1)
In sleep mode it wont do anything as the harddrive is partly shut down, just retaining your settings and connection, basically ready to go in seconds upon wakeup.
Others may explain this in detail.

2)
Depends how well you look after the machine, running a regular cleanup utility will certainly help. For example ccleaner click here
