Vista shutdown error causing pixels to go crazy

Recently I was given a computer that a family member had no use for, and I am having problems shutting down the computer. When I hit shutdown it will either restart and say "Windows has recovered from an unknown error" or more commonly the screen will go as if the pixels have stuffed up, and if I press the off button on the tower then it will turn off. Here is a link to a photo of the screen click here

any ideas or suggestions to try would be great!

Have you tried starting it up (keep tapping F8) in safe mode, and then closing it down in safe mode? Do you still get the same problem?

Hi Ian,

I have tried to open in Safe Mode and restart and the screen has no problems shutting down like normal! What do you think it could be and how do you think I can fix this?
