My friend has Vista Home Premium on his laptop.
On the desktop accross the top of the screen there is a shortcut bar with Internet Explorer, Photo, Music, Video, email etc. which he would like to remove.
any ideas please?

Right Click on the bar and untick "Lock The Toolbar" then drag it to where you want and then tick "lock the Toolbar" again

For Toolbar please read "Task Bar" if you want to hide it right click Start > Properties> Tick Auto Hide

rawprawn, thanks for the response, but it is not the "normal" taskbar, but similar to the vista "windows Sidebar" which he has as well, in this other toolbar there are these items as Internet Explorer, Photo, Music, Video, email etc.well, and it is at the top of his screen?

I suspect that it has been created as a shortcut toolbar see click here. As usual with these things a right click is helpful and should show the option to close the toolbar.

Just to add that the toolbar should be able to be dragged to anywhere on the desktop and then you can see a cross to close it. When closed it will appear as a folder on the desktop and to get rid of it completely will have to be dragged to the recycle bin.
This is of course if it has been created via a folder.

ps any folder on the desktop can be dragged to the edges of the screen to form a "shortcut" toolbar to its contents.

If you choose to close it or check it's properties, you will probably be able to find out what it is called.
If it has a system icon in the systray, you may be able to disable it from there by right clicking it and selecting Close. There may be an option to disable it permanently from there.

Once you know its name, you may be able to find it in MSCONFIG and disable it that way - Click Start and in the Search box type MSCONFIG. Go to the Startup Tab and find the entry based on the what you found it to be called and untick the box.

Click OK to exit MSCONFIG and do a restart when convenient.
