Vista and 4GB ram

I have read that Vista 32 bit only recognises approximately 3Gb ram, so would I be wasting money to get 4Gb ram if I am getting Vista 32 bit? or is it just Vista that wouldn't use/recognise the extra memory but other programs would/may be able to make use of the 4Gb?

Yes, you'd be wasting money, nothing can access it. The processor can only address 4gb, 512mb-768mb of that will be taken up with hardware addresses for graphics cards and the like.

Not a waste if you plan to move to 64bit anytime soon though.

If only the processor can access 4Gb.

So, if I were to get 3Gb would the same amount 512mb-768mb be taken up with hardware addresses for graphics cards and the like, as if this is the case I would then only have 2.5Gb? if this is correct then would it not be better to get 4Gb as I would have thought that it would be better to take the 512-768mb of of the 4Gb rather than out of the 3Gb?

No, the total address space is 4gb, you only lose the top 512/768mb to hardware. The system will still see and use at least 3 to 3.25gb.

So for the system to see and use at least 3 to 3.25Gb I would have to buy 4Gb?

  brundle 23:12 29 Jan 2008

Yes, except that last Gb would only provide .25Gb or so of memory - if you can configure a system with 3Gb you would get more value for money.

Thanks very much for clearing that up brundle. You would have expected that Microsoft would/could have made both the 32 bit & 64 bit versions to recognise 4Gb ram. Thanks again.

It's not MS's fault, 4gb of memory in a PC was inconceivable when PC manufacturers came up with the memory map. But yes, it is a pain.

Why do you need all the RAM? I have a Win98se Desktop a XP Laptop and a XP Desktop all just have 512mb Ram each, I can do anything including Video Edit. Why all the RAM

Vista needs 1GB minimum to run, its recommended to have at least 2GB with Vista. I would sooner have too much than not enough.
