Is this a virus?

  numskull 17:23 28 Mar 2004

A relative has phoned to say that he cannot do anything with his computer. He is getting a blank screen with a message from Microsoft giving him 5 options but none of the options will let him do anything.

I am sure this must be a virus.

If it is, does anyone know what I can do about it?

Depends on:

what are the 5 options? (Start normal, safe mode etc?)

What OS?

Not necessarily a virus but a problem with the OS.

OS is XP Home. I know the details are sketchy but I am going to have a look this evening.

Doesn't sound like a virus to me - sounds like the selective startup screen.

Well, as VoG™ suggests, go for a reinstall - sounds like it could be needed. Or as an alternative, try the repair console.

It was a start up screen. Whichever option you chose (start in safe mode, start normally or last known good configuration)all brought you back to the same start up screen.
He says he has not installed anything or deleted, not messed about with any drivers.

I ran the recovery floppy which seems to have solved the problem. He does not seem to have an XP home cd!
