Virtual Memory Question

  Chris Webster 23:14 17 Nov 2009

Can I ask what is the default setting for virtual memory please.

Is it 'custom size' or 'system managed size'?

Regards, Chris.

It's the latter. But if you're working with large files like video it's best to set it as at least twice the size of your ram.

Thank you JanetO,

In the settings mine's on 'custom', and reads

Initial Size (MB) 720

Maximum Size (MB) 1440

I have recently upgraded the ram in my laptop (XP Home) to 2GB but taking into account the graphics card it says 1.96GB so are the above figures still correct?

Regards, Chris.

I would increase those by double at least.

As far as I'm aware the more memory you have installed the smaller the page file can be as you won't need to use it so much.

For 1GB ram it's recommended you set the initial and maximum size to 2048MB, i.e. 2GB

For 2GB ram it's recommended you set the initial and maximum to 1024MB, i.e. 1GB

For 3-4GB ram it's recommended you set the initial and maximum to 512MB

To be honest though I've found some programs, particularly games, have a tendency to complain if they can't have the Virtual memory they want, I just leave Windows to manage my Virtual memory. With 2GB fitted you shouldn't have much of a problem doing the same.
