When you say normal Virgin do you mean Cable or ADSL (BT line) if cable he will already have the modem all he will need is a wireless router to put between the modem and the computer click here any one of these will do.

If ADSL (virgin.net) then he will need to replace the modem he has with a combined modem/router click here any one of these will do.

A pair of Homeplugs from Solwise will allow the laptop to share the broadband from any room in the house. Very very simple to use, does not even need any software setup - they really are 'Plug-n-Go' ........

Would you need to have the desktop on all the time with that setup?

If he has been with Virgin over 1 year he can cancel his contract then sign back on and get a better deal with a new Router that is if he takes the large package.
Or speak to them nicely and they may throw one in free rather than see him move.
I am sure he would be able to pick up a wireless router for less than the £60 that virgin are going to charge if he is going to pay.
