Videoconferencing How Does It Work ?

Last week I sat in on my first ever videoconference and I was really impressed.

But I wondered how come they avoid having a jerky screen like I have with my webcam.

I assume it is something to do with bandwith but they are a charity organisation so I cant imagine they would be paying an absolute fortune for this technology.

Also the picture was on their TV and it was really clear. Again how do they manage that without losing resolution.

Granted occasionaly the screen jumped and now and again there was jerky movements but overall it was really impressive.

I can see why videoconferencing is becoming more popular.

Video conferencing is becoming clever. They use video compression techniques to fit more video down one line and ISDN lines with 128kbps data rate give really impressive video conferencing experiences.
Broadband with 1 Mbps or more is even better and is becmoing increasingly affordable.
Devoted video conferencing kit is a million times better than PC based video conferencing and the kit isn't millions of money to buy either.
