video experts?

I've just bought a Sony DVD-201e camcorder. What I hoped to do was capture stills from the video footage (not actually take stills like a normal camera). Does anyone know how this is done? Does it need particular software, and if so is there any free s/w that'll do it?

I use Pinnacle DV to capture the video from camera to PC, and to then edit it and convert it into the right format for making a DVD. Pinnacle includes a function which allows you to select any single frame you want from the downloaded video, and to save it as a separate image.

I presume that the other major video editing softares will do the same thing, though I don't have experience of them.

I use Ulead Video Studio 7, (8 is now available),does a similar, some say easier job than Pinnacle.
