video editing vs video encoding

Whats the difference?

err, editing means just that i.e cropping/changing etc.

Encoding is converting the file to dvd/video format.

thanks, now I see why the encoding bit takes all theh processing power!

Presumably the editing bit is done at lower resolution etc so the PC is handling less data in doing so.

Yes the encoding does take a lot of processing power, it is best to leave it running with nothing else running to speed it up (although does depend on which programe you use), the editing is just things like adding menus, cropping scenes etc souses far less. Resalution does not really come in to it, but the better graphics card you the better/easier it is.

Your presumption is exactly right.
