very pale display

just been helping a friend set up a new email account and found her display was so pale that (as she had previously mentioned to me) it's hard to see where the scroll bar is or whether an envelope (in Windows Mail Inbox)is open or closed.
OS is Vista and monitor is an Acer AL1717.
It's perhaps curable using the buttons on the monitor but you have to know in advance which one to use as they close down so quickly. Anyone else familiar with this, please?

I take the correct drivers are installed that may be the problem.

thanks, csqwared, for those links. I don't know what drivers are installed but I'll check next time I visit.

If it,s the same as my old ACER 1714,that too was very pale.
When you press the menu button,it gives you the option to alter the brightness and contrast.(sun symbol)
You need to take them all the way down to zero from the default setting of 50.
Everyones preferences are different but they do seem to be set too bright.

Only problem now is working out HOW to take the settings down. Press the Menu button on the frame; then click enter on keyboard; brightness and contrast settings are there --but then it all closes down before we've done anything. Please, can anyone explain WHICH KEYS, etc we need to use to actually MAKE THE ADJUSTMENTS to brightness and contrast that mrwoowoo suggested.

Have now downloaded and printed the relevant page of the manual accessed from csqwared's link and will give it a go.
