I would like to use Linux but want to avoid partitioning due to bad MBR experiences. I am considering external usb powered hard drive to install Linux with my main drive C still running my windows xp. Can this be done ? grateful for all replies, Dave (still learning )

Why not set up Linux on your hard drive but rather than alter your mbr - use the floppy disc start up option.

This would then mean that if you start your p/c normally it would load windows and if you wanted to start Linux you use the floppy disc.
